One of Europe's defining features is its diversity. Yet the continent's countries also have many things in common: values, cultural roots and interlocking political structures. Fifty years after the ratification of the Treaty of Rome, Europe has achieved a great deal. We should not lose sight of this fact, even as we view the current turbulence in the eurozone with worry. I am optimistic that we will pass this test. If we do, we will emerge from the crisis with renewed strength.
After all, Europe's real economy is strong and resilient. What makes it so successful? And what makes management in Europe special? Is there a unique "made in Europe" management style – and does it offer better solutions for the future than other types of management, which are at the heart of the current problems? We are convinced that Europe's companies have a lot to offer in terms of reshaping global business.
Since 2005, our "Best of European Business" award has been in a class of its own: we honor Europe's most successful companies. The goal is to highlight special European management role models and initiate a discussion about Europe's strengths and prospects.
The focus of the 2012 competition in Germany is Africa. Many African countries have considerable untapped economic potential. We want to celebrate German companies that are pursuing innovative business models in these countries. We are looking for sustainable commitment that is focused on supporting these up-and-coming economies – with capital, know-how and modern technology. In doing so, we place special value on companies that make an exemplary and responsible contribution to stabilizing and developing African companies. This includes establishing business relationships and true partnerships.
